Camp Okavango Monthly Report – July

Dirang

Our environment Camp Okavango is a tranquil place. The water level has been dropping in some areas, especially in already shallow areas, but generally speaking the level is still high which means the fishing is not at its best.  We usually have access to three islands on which we conduct our walking safaris. A Monday morning with a difference

Camp O Male Lion

On Monday morning, two groups – each comprising three guests, a guide and a tracker – set off for separate bush walks at Buffalo Island. As they made their way around the island, the two groups met up at a central point. Little did they know they were about to experience Botswana at its most exhilarating!

2010 Service Excellence Awards

As we all look forward to the future – with the New Year just hours away – we are also looking back at the past year and in particular, the performance of our team members. Every year Desert & Delta Safaris gives a series of awards to our camps and staff, acknowledging those particular members and teams who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make our guests’ experiences so special.

John Kata’s 30-year service award

John Kata is Desert & Delta’s longest-serving employee and this week receives his 30-year Long Service award. John has been at Camp Okavango since it was first built by the original owner, Jessie Neil, in 1980. He has always harboured a desire to visit Chobe Game Lodge and as a thank you for his excellent and lengthy service, we have arranged this for him.

The Poet of Camp Okavango

Camp Okavango - Guest Poem

Many of our guests at Desert & Delta Safaris complete our questionnaires and admit their hearts have been well and truly captured by Africa – but this particular guest was so enamoured by Camp Okavango that she penned a beautiful poem!

A tribute to Jessie Neil, 1927-2010

Last week, Desert & Delta Safaris learned of the sad death of Jessie Neil, the original founder of the company and a pioneer of photographic safari tourism in Botswana.

Desert & Delta Safaris – and, in fact, the entire Botswana tourism industry – would not have been the same without the influence of this great woman, and so today we post a tribute to this larger-than-life lady.

Western Banded Snake Eagle seen

Western Banded Snake Eagle

On a visit to Camp Okavango, guests were very lucky to be greeted in camp by a Western Banded Snake Eagle. This rare species is extremely elusive and is not often seen in the Okavango Delta.

All About the Water Camps

Malachite Kingfisher

Of Desert & Delta Safaris’ six Botswana safari lodges, two of them are dedicated water camps: Camp Okavango and Xugana Island Lodge. Each safari lodge is situated on a different island in the Okavango Delta, and it is this island isolation which makes for the most wonderful safari experience.

Batty about bats

Mauritian Tomb Bat

Bats may not be at the top of our guests’ ‘must see’ lists, but they are actually fascinating, overlooked (and misunderstood) creatures.

2008 Annual Service Excellence Award

2008 Elephant Trophy - Camp Okavango

Desert & Delta Safaris introduced the Annual Service Excellence Award, The Elephant Trophy, eight years ago to identify the lodge that best personifies our guest-centric service ethos. Since then the trophy has always been keenly contested, testament to our staff’s proud commitment to that ethos.
