Wild Dogs at Camp Moremi

Camp Moremi Wild Dogs

During Friday’s siesta, some of our guests were enjoying a panoramic view of the lagoon from our viewing deck. Suddenly the peace was shattered as a bushbuck came hurtling through the grounds, running at full speed across the grass.

Leopard Hat-trick

Leopard with impala

Monday 6th June was a sensational day for sightings at Savute Safari Lodge. During the morning activities, our guides spotted two wild dogs amongst a herd of buffalo. Wild dogs are always a wonderful sighting and our guests watched in awe as these beautiful ‘painted dogs’ hung around, planning their next move. However, Mother Nature had more in store for our guests on this sunny Monday morning, and she decided to factor a leopard into the mix.

Wild dogs at Nxai Pan

Wild dogs are not often seen in the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, and in fact have not been sighted in more than a year. Therefore imagine our guides’ surprise when they approached the waterhole on the road to the Nxai Pan gate and saw two wild dogs feeding off domestic goats.

Desert & Delta Safaris is actively involved with a number of Botswana charities, and this week was happy to add one more to its roster.

Maun Animal Welfare Society is a non-profit organisation which aims to protect Botswana’s wildlife through domestic animal care. Wild dogs and leopards at Savute Safari Lodge

Yesterday was a busy day at Savute Safari Lodge. Guests on a game drive enjoyed a beautiful leopard sighting; as they watched the leopard weave along the road they were then delighted to see stalking a small owl. It was unsuccessful in its search for dinner but the opportunity to watch it nimbly make its way up a very spindly tree was a wonderful sighting.

Hot on the heels of last Thursday’s wild dog sighting by the pool, tonight guests at Savute Safari Lodge once more witnessed a wild dog tearing through the grounds in pursuit of an impala.

Wild dogs spend a morning at the pool

Exactly three months ago we told a story of wild dogs chasing an impala through the workshop at Savute Safari Lodge. It’s becoming a regular route for the impala as they try and evade the wild dogs, as this morning we were paid another visit.

We were back in business again this past month with a very busy August. Temperatures started rising later in the month as we were going into spring time, with midday temperatures reaching close to 30 degrees Celsius. August also normally brings us a lot of windy weather and this year was no exception.

Late night leopards at Savute

In July we blogged about the vast numbers of elephants that can be seen, day and night, at the artificial waterhole near Savute Safari Lodge’s viewing deck. However, it’s not just the elephants that visit the lodge on a daily basis.

Wild dogs take an early morning swim

At Desert & Delta Safaris we try our best to tempt guests out of bed, from the gentle wake-up call to the piping hot coffee and hearty breakfast which will keep you warm till brunch. But on Friday, early risers at Savute Safari Lodge had an extra treat in store.
